Register of Cossacks of 1649
Search on the database "Register of Cossacks of 1649"The 1649 Register of the Zaporozhian Host is an important historical document of significant value to the history of Ukraine and the Cossacks. It was created following the Battle of Zboriv in 1649, after which the Polish king Jan II Kazimierz recognized the autonomy of the Hetmanate within the Kiev, Chernihiv, and Bratslav Voivodeships.
The uniqueness of the Register lies in its structure, which varied among different regiments: some included entries by the names of centurions, others by the names of the centers of hundreds. For example, in the Bratslav regiment, the Cossacks were distributed according to locality. Interestingly, the registers were initially formed locally, then sent to the regiment center, and finally to the Hetman's residence in Chyhyryn, where they were combined into a single list.
Not only as a historical artifact but also as a practical tool for searching for ancestors among the Cossacks or choosing names for newborns, this document is of great importance. Currently, access to the full register in electronic format can simplify the process of searching for specific names.
The register contains 40,470 names of Cossacks.
