Leonid Toptunov Fedorovich

Biography:

Leonid Toptunov was born on August 16, 1960 in the village of Mykolaivka, Buryn district, Sumy region. In 1983, he graduated from the Moscow Engineering and Physics Institute, majoring in nuclear power plants and installations. After graduating from the institute, on March 31, 1983, he started working at the Chornobyl NPP as a young specialist.

He worked as a unit control engineer, and later as a senior reactor control engineer of the reactor shop. On the night of April 26, 1986, he was working on the control panel of the 4th power unit at the time of the accident. He received a radiation dose of 1300 ber. Leonid Toptunov died on May 14, 1986 from radiation sickness in the 6th Moscow Clinical Hospital.

Awards

Leonid Toptunov was posthumously awarded the Order of Courage III degree by the decree of the President of Ukraine dated December 12, 2008 for courage, dedication, high professionalism, demonstrated during the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster, significant labor achievements and active public activity.
