Biography:

Martyn Nebaba (beginning of the 17th century - July 6 (July 16) 1651) was a Ukrainian politician and military figure of the era of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, the founder of the Nebab family. Elected Otaman of Zaporizhzhya Sich. During the National Liberation War of Ukraine 1648-1657 — Colonel Borzenskyi; Colonel Chernihivskyi; commanding hetman of the Ukrainian army in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania; the commanding hetman of the left-bank regiments of Ukraine. Died in battle on the Belarusian front.

He came from the burghers of Korostyshev. From a young age, he was in Zaporizhzhia, for some time he was chieftain. In May 1648, he led an uprising against the Polish authorities in the Chernihiv Voivodeship of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He became the organizer and the first colonel of the Borznyan regiment, and from the beginning of 1649, the Chernihiv colonel.

In the summer of 1649, on behalf of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, he commanded the Ukrainian troops in Belarus. Participant of the Battle of Pylyava in 1648 and the campaign of Cossack troops in Galicia. In October 1648, Martyn Nebaba led the vanguard of the Ukrainian army during the campaign to Zamosta. At the beginning of 1649, he was the commanding hetman of the left-bank regiments. At the head of his regiment, he participated in the siege of Zborivsk in 1649 and the battle of Zborivsk in 1649. He opposed the conclusion of the Zborivsk peace treaty in 1649.

In the summer of 1651, a regiment commanded by Nebaba besieged Gomel, but was forced to retreat due to the attack of significant Polish-Lithuanian forces. He led the defense of Chernihiv-Sivershchyna against the advance of Prince Janusz Radziwill's troops. Died in a battle with superior enemy forces near Ripka near Loyev (now Belarus). According to legend, Janusz Radziwiłł, impressed by Nebaba's courage, ordered a high grave to be built over his burial place.

Family ties

Nebaba's widow, who had to take care of his sons Andrii and Ohrim herself, later married a second time to the Shapoval centurion Samiil Kurbatsky. In May 1659, Martyn Nebaba's widow and children were kidnapped by Moscow troops and taken from Borzna to Putivl. After a few months, she was released, but the poor woman had a hard time. Hetman Ivan Bryukhovetsky issued her two guard wagons. Later, Mykhailo Nebaba became a Starodub colonel, Andriy Nebaba a Shapoval centurion, and Okhrim Nebaba a "notable military comrade".

Commemoration

There is Martyna Nebaba Street in the cities of Chernihiv and Korostyshiv. In the city of Nikopol, Makarenko Street was renamed Martyn Nebaba Street.
