Biography:
Early years and education
Ivan Yelizarovich Kartava was born in 1893 in a poor peasant family with many children. He graduated from the Kherson Men's Gymnasium (now B. A. Lavrenov Gymnasium No. 20), and later entered the Odessa Medical Institute, where he received a medical education. He took his first steps in surgery during the First World War, becoming a versatile surgeon and mastering various methods of pain relief.
Career and achievements
In 1929, Ivan Yelyzarovych headed the Berezneguvat District Hospital. After the civil war, he strengthened the material base of the medical institution, provided it with electrification, drilled an artesian well and laid a water pipeline. Under his leadership, an auxiliary farm was created, a polyclinic, therapeutic and physiotherapeutic buildings, a solarium for tuberculosis patients were built, a park was laid out, an X-ray room, a blood transfusion station and a maternity ward were created.
War period
During the German-Soviet war, Ivan Yelizarovych headed the military evacuation hospital in Kherson and fought as part of the Third Ukrainian Front. After the war, he returned to Berezneguvaty, where he was actively engaged in the reconstruction of the destroyed hospital. In 1948, physiotherapy and X-ray rooms, a functional medicine room, a dental prosthesis room, a laboratory were opened, and the hospital was telephoned and an emergency room was established.
Post-war years
In 1956, Ivan Kartava retired, but continued to work as a surgeon until 1962. Thanks to his skill, a modest village hospital became one of the leading centers of surgery in the south of Ukraine.
Charity during the Holodomor
During the Holodomor of 1932-1933, Ivan Kartava saved the lives of many people, especially children. According to eyewitnesses, he fed the starving, prolonging their stay in the hospital, where he provided food, and also shared his ration with the sick.
Awards and recognition
Ivan Kartava was awarded the Order of the Red Star and the Patriotic War, medals "For Combat Merit" and "For Courage". His activities are recognized and honored with numerous awards.
Family
Of the two children of Ivan Kartava, the son became a sailor, and the daughter became a doctor. The son, Oleksandr Ivanovich Kartava, became the deputy rector of the educational department of the Mykolaiv Shipbuilding Institute. The grandson, Serhii Fedorovych Bagnenko, became the director of the I. I. Janelidze St. Petersburg Emergency Research Institute, a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a doctor of medical sciences, a professor, the author of 300 scientific works, 11 monographs, 5 patents, and the chief surgeon of the North-Western Federal District .
Memory
Ivan Kartava is buried in the city of Kherson on the main avenue of the Komyshan cemetery. His bust has been installed in the Berezneguvat district hospital. He is called "Berezneguvat Platon Krechet" for his contribution to the development of medicine and surgery.
