Petro Doroshenko Dorofiiovich

? -

Biography:

He was born in 1627 in Chigyrin (now Cherkasy region, Ukraine). He came from an ancient Cossack family. His grandfather, Mykhailo Doroshenko, was an associate of Pyotr Sahaidachny and died in a campaign to the Crimea in 1628. Peter's father, Dorofiy Doroshenko, was an executive hetman.

Start of military career

He received a good education, spoke Latin and Polish. At the beginning of the Khmelnytskyi region, he served as a scribe of the Zaporizhzhya Army. In 1655, he was appointed a commanding colonel and headed the Prylutskyi, Chygyrinskyi, Kanivskyi, and Cherkasy regiments. Performed diplomatic tasks for Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, conducted negotiations with Sweden and Moscow.

Hetmanship

In 1665, he was elected hetman of Right Bank Ukraine. He introduced reforms, created a regular army, minted his own coin, developed the colonization of uninhabited lands. Tried to unite Left-Bank and Right-Bank Ukraine under his rule.

An attempt to unite with the Left Bank

In 1668, he moved to Left Bank Ukraine during the anti-Moscow uprising. He was proclaimed hetman of both banks of the Dnieper, but due to the resistance of the Zaporozhians and the intervention of Moscow, he was forced to return to the Right Bank.

Union with the Ottoman Empire

In 1669, he concluded an alliance with the Ottoman Empire and received the title of Bey of the Ukrainian Sanjak. This made it possible to preserve the autonomy of Right-Bank Ukraine, but required constant struggle with the Commonwealth of Nations and Moscow.

War with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

In 1672, he started large-scale military operations together with the Ottoman Empire against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Captured Kamianets-Podilskyi, concluded the Buchatsky Peace Treaty, according to which the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth renounced its claims to Right-Bank Ukraine.

Renunciation of the mace

In the fall of 1675, Petro Doroshenko renounced hetman power. After that he settled in Sosnytsia, and later in Moscow. He spent the last years of his life in the village of Yaropolchy, where he died on November 19, 1698. Buried at the local cemetery.
