Biography:
Ivan Chornota - an outstanding Ukrainian statesman and military figure, colonel, general of the army (1649-1650), associate of the Hetman of the Zaporizhzhya Army Bohdan Khmelnytskyi.
He came from the noble family of Chornot-Diamentivsky coat of arms "Sas" from Zhivotov. Received a good education.
In 1648, he joined the Zaporizhzhya Army. Although his participation in the first battles is unknown, according to Volodymyr Kryvosheya, Ivan Chornota could have been the Zhivotiv colonel during the existence of the Zhivotiv regiment in 1648.
Main events
- He was first mentioned among the foreman of the Zaporozhian Army during the siege of Lviv in 1648.
- During the siege of Zamosti in 1648, he was wounded in the leg, and even then he was called General Ozov.
- In February 1649, he was ill in Pereyaslav, and in April he was on duty again.
- He led the siege of Zbaraza in 1649 as an orderly hetman.
- After the conclusion of the Treaty of Zboriv in 1649, he supervised the compilation of the Zaporizhzhya Army Register, where he was entered third after Bohdan Khmelnytskyi and his son Timofey with the designation of "consignment soldier".
After 1650, it is not mentioned in the sources, and Ivan Volevach became the new general train driver.
Literary heritage
Ivan Chornota is sung by Adrian Kashchenko in the story "In the Heat of the Struggle". He is also one of the main characters of Mykhailo Starytskyi's trilogy "Bohdan Khmelnytskyi".
