Biography:
Viktor Bryukhanov was born on December 1, 1935 in Tashkent, Uzbek SSR. He graduated from the Faculty of Power Engineering of the Tashkent Polytechnic Institute in 1959. He worked at the Angrenskaya TPP, where he worked his way up from the next reactor unit to the head of the turbine shop.
In 1966, he was invited to work at Sloviansk TPP, where he held the position of deputy chief engineer until 1970. From 1970 to 1986, he held the position of director of the Chornobyl NPP, at the same time being repeatedly elected a member of the bureau of the Kyiv regional, Chornobyl district, and Pripyat city committees of the party.
After the disaster at the Chornobyl NPP in 1986, Bryukhanov was removed from the position of director and transferred to the position of deputy head of the production and technical department of the Chernobyl NPP. In 1988, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but he was released early after 5 years. Further investigation revealed technological errors in the design of the reactor.
Since 1992, he has worked at SE "Ukrinterenergo" and was an active participant in the liquidation of the accident at the Chernobyl NPP until 2008. Lived in Kyiv with his wife Valentina Mykhailivna, suffered two strokes.
