Biography:
Olexander Akimov was born on May 6, 1953 in the city of Novosibirsk, Russian Federation. In 1976, he graduated from the Moscow Energy Institute, majoring in the automation of thermal energy processes.
From September 1979, he worked at the Chornobyl NPP. At first, he held the position of a senior turbine control engineer, then became a shift chief of the turbine shop. On July 10, 1984, he was appointed the head of the block shift.
On the night of April 26, 1986, during the accident at the fourth power unit, Akimov tried to assess the scale of the disaster and localize its consequences. He and his subordinates worked until morning, trying to pump water into the reactor without protective suits. Oleksandr Akimov died on May 11, 1986 from radiation sickness at the age of 33 in the 6th Moscow Clinical Hospital.
