Heroes of Kruty — Database of Battle Participants

The Heroes of Kruty database, developed by roots.in.ua, is a collection of biographical information about participants in the Battle of Kruty, traditionally dated to January 29, 1918. During this battle, Ukrainian soldiers, military cadets, university students, and school pupils defended the Ukrainian People's Republic against advancing Bolshevik forces near the Kruty railway station in the Chernihiv region.

The project's primary goal is to identify and reconstruct the biographies of as many participants in the battle as possible. This includes not only those who died in combat or were executed after being captured, but also those who survived and continued their military, political, public, academic, or cultural activities.

The database is compiled from historical research, archival documents, eyewitness memoirs, biographical publications, and nominal lists. It includes servicemen of the First Kyiv Military School named after Bohdan Khmelnytsky, members of the Haydamak Kosh, volunteers from the Student Battalion of the Sich Riflemen, Kyiv university students, secondary school pupils, medical personnel, and other individuals associated with the defense of Kruty.

Where available, each person's record contains their full name, dates and places of birth and death, education, social background, political affiliation, family connections, military unit, rank or position, circumstances of death, and subsequent fate. Particular attention is given to those who survived the battle, continued serving in the Army of the Ukrainian People's Republic, emigrated abroad, or experienced political persecution.

Information from multiple sources has been cross-referenced, duplicate records have been merged, and conflicting biographical details and alternative name spellings have been preserved in the notes. The participation of certain individuals remains disputed or has not been conclusively established by documentary evidence. Such cases are explicitly identified to distinguish verified historical facts from assumptions and later recollections.

The Heroes of Kruty database is an ongoing historical research project, regularly expanded with additional names and biographical details. Its purpose is to preserve the memory of the defenders of the Ukrainian People's Republic and make historical biographical information accessible to historians, local researchers, genealogists, educators, and everyone interested in Ukrainian history.
